Umphang: The rare "Owl's Eye" plant, a unique species found exclusively in the Umphang forest, has been unveiled, capturing the interest of tourists and nature lovers alike. Hidden deep within the forest, its small size and ability to blend seamlessly into its surroundings means discovering it requires keen observation.
According to Thai News Agency, this rare plant, also known as "Owl's Eye Mystery" or "Thai Golden Mystery," was recently discovered by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Tak office, the Umphang District Tourism Club, and the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary. Found on Doi Hua Mod mountain, the "Owl's Eye Mystery" is a miniature plant with an unusual appearance resembling an owl's eye, which is its most striking feature. It has become a fascinating exhibit showcasing the biodiversity of the Umphang area, particularly during the rainy season when it becomes visible.
The plant has a symbiotic relationship with soil fungi, reflecting the interconnectedness of living things within the ecosystem and highlighting the forest's abundance as a natural resource. A survey of several Owl's Eye plants revealed that they are beginning to produce blossoms. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) invites tourists and nature enthusiasts to visit Umphang District to witness the wonder of this rare plant. The Owl's Eye, considered a distinctive natural attraction, is accessible via a paved road from Umphang town towards Ban Pahla Tha. At kilometer marker 8, a short walk leads visitors to the Owl's Eye plants thriving under the Pong trees in the area.
