Bangkok: "Toto," an individual symbolizing a collective plea, has received a petition from various civic and human rights groups urging an investigation into alleged harassment by a group claiming to protect the monarchy.
According to Thai News Agency, the petition was formally submitted to Mr. Piyarat Jongthep, the First Vice Chairman of the Committee on Law, Justice, and Human Rights, and Mr. Eksak Homchuen, Member of Parliament from the People's Party. The Democracy Restoration Group, backed by human rights lawyers and various civic groups, presented the letter citing concerns about the group's use of force and intimidation tactics against citizens. The allegations include following citizens to their homes, physical assaults, and vehicular intimidation on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.
Mr. Piyarat Jongthep, in his official capacity, acknowledged receipt of the petition and expressed concern about the potential impact on citizens' rights and freedoms. The reported incidents, which allegedly occurred on July 22nd, involved a group accused of harassing citizens under the pretense of protecting national and religious values. The victims have reported these incidents to the Bangkok Metropolitan Police, but progress on the case has been slow.
The Vice Chairman highlighted that this is not an isolated incident, as similar cases of harassment have been reported in recent years, affecting individuals with differing political views and migrant workers. This ongoing situation raises significant concerns about human rights violations. The committee has pledged to investigate thoroughly and follow up with relevant agencies to ensure that the rights and freedoms of citizens are respected and protected.
