Bangkok: Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the official opening ceremony of the MEA SPARK Thai Electricity Museum at the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) headquarters, a historic site in the Wat Lieb Subdistrict of Phra Nakhon District. The ceremony, marking a significant moment in the preservation and celebration of Thailand's electricity history, was attended by prominent figures including Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Acting Prime Minister; Ms. Teerarat Samretwanit, Deputy Minister of Interior; Mr. Orasith Sampantharat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior; and Mr. Wilas Chelaysat, Governor of MEA, among others.
According to Thai News Agency, the MEA SPARK Electricity Museum will serve as a public educational resource beginning in October 2025, emphasizing the evolution of electricity in Thailand from its historical roots to future innovations. The museum is housed in Building 1 of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, a site of historical significance as the location of Thailand's first power plant, inaugurated by King Rama VI in 1916. The building has been restored with attention to its architectural heritage and adapted for modern exhibitions.
The museum's mission, "Back to the Future Journey," offers visitors an immersive experience in the history and future of electricity in Thailand. The exhibitions are designed to engage visitors through a blend of historical artifacts, art models, interactive lighting, and music. The museum is divided into three floors, each dedicated to different aspects of Thailand's electricity history, from its inception to modern-day innovations and future prospects in smart energy.
The museum will be open to the public free of charge starting October 1, 2025, providing an opportunity for visitors to explore the transformation of the electricity sector and its impact on urban lifestyle and society. The museum's SPARK Zone will highlight future energy solutions and innovations in Smart City development, aiming to foster creative learning and cultural preservation.
