Udon Thani:Prime Minister Varawut Chan-o-cha, along with key figures from the Ministry of Industry, received a petition opposing the potash mine expansion during a Cabinet meeting in Udon Thani. The petition was submitted by a network of groups concerned about the potential impacts of the mining activities.
According to Thai News Agency, the petition was presented by the Network of Students and People for Thailand Reform (NSPR), led by Mr. Pichit Chaimongkol, and the Anti-Potash Mining Group, led by Mr. Khamplai Khampangrach, a former mayor of Phak Top Subdistrict. The groups are opposing the expansion of potash exploration areas and the application for exploration licenses in Phak Top and Phon Ngam subdistricts, Nong Han district, and surrounding regions.
The protesters have raised concerns about the potential negative impact of potash mining on chemical fertilizer prices due to market mechanisms and the adverse effects on their way of life and the environment. Minister of Industry Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa stated that the matter would be forwarded to the Prime Minister, and the Ministry of Industry would coordinate with relevant agencies to address the issue. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that mining operations meet international standards and prioritize public safety.
