Prime Minister Orders Nationwide Overhaul of Foundation Activities

Udon Thani:The Prime Minister has initiated a nationwide reorganization of foundations, mandating an investigation into their fundraising and donation activities to prevent public deception.

According to Thai News Agency, during the second official Cabinet meeting held outside of Bangkok in 2026 at the Montathip International Convention Center, the Prime Minister's Spokesperson, Mr. Ekkapop Pienpises, highlighted the Cabinet's reaffirmation of the importance of cooperation between the Cabinet, relevant ministers, and the House of Representatives. This includes responding to questions, clarifying inquiries, and participating in committee meetings.

Additionally, the Cabinet addressed the issue of legal reform, with the Office of the Council of State reviewing laws for possible repeal or amendment. They decided to repeal nine laws, retain the Deportation Act, and amend three others to better reflect current circumstances. This effort aims to modernize laws to align with the current social and administrative context.

A significant decision from the Cabinet meeting involved the restructuring of excise tax on electric vehicles. The excise tax rates for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Remotely Operated Electric Vehicles (REEVs) have been adjusted to 35%, aiming to bolster Thailand's position as a hub for electric vehicle production and export while supporting the automotive supply chain.

Regarding the oversight of foundations, the Prime Minister has tasked the Ministry of Interior, particularly the Department of Provincial Administration, with ensuring that foundations operate transparently and in line with legal and stated objectives. This initiative requires collaboration with agencies such as the Royal Thai Police and the Anti-Money Laundering Office.

The government is taking measures to ensure that foundations use donations appropriately, particularly for aiding disaster victims and those in need, as per donors' intentions. The Ministry of Interior will monitor foundations closely to prevent misuse of their status for illicit gain.

Foundations found misusing funds or conducting activities inconsistent with their objectives may face legal action under various acts, including the Fundraising Control Act and the Anti-Money Laundering Act. The Prime Minister has also instructed that annual performance reports be submitted to maintain transparency and trust among donors.
