Bangkok: The Prime Minister of Thailand engaged in discussions with the Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, focusing on enhancing the close relationship between the two neighboring countries and committing to ongoing comprehensive cooperation, particularly in promoting connectivity.
According to Thai News Agency, His Excellency Mr. Sisavath Inphachanh, the newly appointed Ambassador of Laos to Thailand, paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. Mr. Siriphong Angkasakulkiat, Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, shared insights into the discussion, highlighting the Prime Minister's confidence in the Ambassador's ability to advance cooperation between the two nations.
The Prime Minister extended a warm welcome to the Ambassador and highlighted the importance of the close cultural and traditional ties between Thailand and Laos. The Ambassador of Laos conveyed condolences over the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, and the recent flooding in southern Thailand, announcing a donation of US$200,000 from the Lao government to support recovery efforts. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for this assistance.
Both parties discussed key aspects of their bilateral relations, emphasizing satisfaction with their long-standing relationship and increased high-level exchanges. This year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Laos, with activities planned to celebrate the occasion. The Ambassador expressed hope for successful collaboration in organizing the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation meeting in 2026.
Connectivity and logistics were also pivotal points of discussion, with both sides looking forward to the opening of the 5th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge on December 25, 2025. This event is seen as a significant milestone that will enhance trade, investment, and tourism opportunities. The Prime Minister underscored Thailand's support for Laos' Land-Locked-to-Land-Linked policy, anticipating further developments in infrastructure.
Regarding the Thai-Cambodian border situation, the Prime Minister thanked Laos for its supportive stance and stressed the importance of accurate information. He clarified that recent measures to control oil exports are temporary and solely aimed at preventing smuggling, not restricting exports to Laos, reiterating that the conflict is a bilateral issue between Thailand and Cambodia.
