Bangkok: The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to retailers for their cooperation in not exploiting the situation and offering discounts on black and mourning clothing during a time of national mourning. He emphasized that those who attempt to take advantage of the situation will face legal consequences.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ayrin Phanrit, Deputy Government Spokesperson, highlighted the increased demand for black and mourning clothing following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed his appreciation to retailers for their collaboration in providing discounts, ensuring that citizens can wear appropriate attire to express their condolences.
The Deputy Government Spokesperson further informed that the Prime Minister has directed the Department of Internal Trade to vigilantly oversee the pricing and availability of goods sold by clothing retailers and online platforms. This initiative aims to prevent price inflation and unfair sales practices, ensuring that the public can access mourning clothing at reasonable prices, with an ample selection available both in physical stores and online. Additionally, individuals eligible for the "Half-Half Plus" program are encouraged to use their benefits to purchase black clothing at participating outlets.
The Deputy Government Spokesperson also urged the public to report any unfair practices related to the sale of black clothing to the Department of Internal Trade at 1569 or the Consumer Council at 1502. Complaints can also be submitted to the Office of the Consumer Protection Board at 1166. Business owners are reminded that violations will be prosecuted under the Price of Goods and Services Act B.E. 2542 (1999), with penalties including fines and imprisonment for failing to display prices, overpricing, and hoarding goods for profit.
