Bangkok: The Prime Minister joins in congratulating Mahidol University award recipients. The Prime Minister congratulated the recipients of the Mahidol University Jongjetmethiwich Award for 2025, praising them as models driving Thai public health onto the world stage, transforming the Thai health system beyond disease treatment to creating quality and long-lasting lives for all.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul presided over the Health Equity and Sustainability Thailand event and the congratulatory reception for the 2025 Mahidol University Jongjetmethiwich Award recipients.
The Prime Minister congratulated the recipients of the 2025 Mahidol University Jongjetmethiwich Award, stating that today was the first time he felt like he was in familiar territory, having been colleagues since his time as Minister of Public Health. He expressed his greatest pride in seeing respected professors receive this award, as well as medical personnel who have contributed greatly to the Thai public health sector. He added that seeing medical personnel dedicate themselves and donate their personal funds to research is a tremendous example, aligning with the mission statement that "health is the greatest capital," as no matter how wealthy, without good health, life is nothing short of hell on earth.
The Prime Minister added that throughout the COVID-19 crisis, he has been greatly inspired and encouraged by the medical personnel, including medical professors, who have come together to support the Ministry of Public Health's work, reflecting their true sacrifice and dedication. He also received advice from medical professors who have played a key role in pushing forward public health policies, such as the free dialysis policy, which has greatly benefited the public. He affirmed his commitment to pushing for its return.
Thailand also boasts a universal health coverage system, recognized globally. This pride has helped ensure good health for Thais and serves as a model for many countries to study and apply. However, Thailand's public health system requires a budget to care for its citizens, from birth to aging, illness, and death. The key goal is to ensure a good quality of life for its citizens.
The Prime Minister also stated that the Thai public health system is the foundation for a high quality of life for all Thais. At the same time, all parties must recognize the importance of "health sustainability" and build a system that can withstand global changes, the challenges of emerging diseases, and the transition to a fully aging society.
"The government prioritizes budget allocation to support research, innovation, and the development of quality personnel, both in education and in practice. Highly qualified personnel, such as the two professors who received this award, exemplify the value and importance of supporting research and development, which will lead to the country's progress and sustainable development," said Mr. Anutin.
For 2025, there will be two award recipients: 1) Outstanding Researcher, Dr. Wiroj Tangcharoensathien, Foundation for International Health Policy Development; and 2) Young Researcher, Associate Professor Dr. Warodom Charoensawan, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. This is one of the largest national researcher awards and the first of its kind. It honors high-quality researchers who create work that is practically applicable, has the power to change the world, and creates a positive impact on society (Real World Impact).
