Prime Minister and Olympic Council of Asia President Agree to Leverage Sports for Peace and Development

Bangkok: The Prime Minister of Thailand held discussions with the President of the Olympic Council of Asia, focusing on leveraging sports to promote peace, youth development, and economic growth. The meeting underscored the strategic use of sports as a tool for fostering unity and sustainable development across the region.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al-Thani, President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul during his visit to Thailand. The Prime Minister congratulated Sheikh Joaan on his appointment as President of the OCA, acknowledging his leadership in strengthening the Olympic movement in Asia. Both leaders emphasized the significant role of sports beyond competition, highlighting its potential to foster unity, peace, and youth development, as well as contributing to sustainable economic growth.

The President of the OCA expressed his appreciation for Thailand's efforts in promoting sports at all levels, particularly in youth development, which encourages life skills, discipline, and mutual understanding between nations. He affirmed the OCA's readiness to collaborate with Thailand to broaden access to sports for youth. The Prime Minister reiterated the government's commitment to using sports as a tool for enhancing the potential, skills, and quality of life of Thai youth while promoting Olympic values and building a peaceful society. The government also aims to position Thailand as a regional hub for sports development and a platform for international cooperation.

The discussions explored potential cooperation within the OCA framework, emphasizing youth development, participation in regional and international sporting events, and using sports to strengthen international relations, promote peace, and stimulate economic and tourism growth. The OCA pledged continuous support for youth and sports development projects.

The Olympic Council of Asia and the National Olympic Committee of Thailand have maintained a long-standing relationship, with Thailand playing a pivotal role in the Asian sports landscape. This includes participating in major Olympic Games, hosting events, and engaging in the OCA's administrative activities. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Surasak Panjaroenvorakul, Minister of Tourism and Sports, and Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Industry.
