Highway police received a tip-off about illegal immigration into the interior late last night. A surveillance team deployed and, around 1:30 AM, spotted a suspicious vehicle carrying an unusually heavy load, speeding along. When officers signaled for the driver to stop, he accelerated, forcing officers to use a Stop Stick device to bring the vehicle to a stop.
The driver, who was arrested, admitted to being paid 800 baht per person, or 12,000 baht in total, to transport this group of Myanmar nationals from a landfill area in Wang Chao District, Tak Province, to Uthai Thani Province. The Myanmar nationals, speaking through an interpreter, stated that they entered Thailand through a natural border crossing in Mae Sot District before being guided into the vehicle, for which they paid 9,000-10,000 baht per person.
