Pipat Cancels May 8th Site Visit to Land Bridge Project Pending Further Study

Bangkok: Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, has announced the cancellation of his planned site visit to the land bridge project on May 8, pending a further study by Ekniti Nitithanprapas. The decision comes as the project undergoes a comprehensive review to ensure its viability and benefits for Thailand.

According to Thai News Agency, Pipat highlighted that the results of the study, which is being conducted by a committee led by Ekniti, will be available within 90 days. He emphasized that the land bridge project is distinct from the Thai Canal project as it does not involve digging a canal that could potentially divide the country. Instead, the project includes the development of a rail system, roads, and energy pipelines, aiming to boost economic growth.

Pipat explained that visiting the site before the study's completion might lead to premature conclusions, stressing the importance of a thorough analysis of the project's environmental impacts and benefits. He assured that the study would adhere to the framework set by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

Addressing public concerns, Pipat stated the need to explain the project's advantages and disadvantages, particularly to residents in Chumphon and Ranong provinces. He acknowledged the potential impact on local livelihoods, such as those of fishermen, and the necessity for alternative employment opportunities.

Regarding potential protests against the project, Pipat affirmed the public's right to express their views. However, he stressed the importance of clearly communicating the project's potential benefits to the nation.

When questioned about the project's potential success compared to past initiatives like the Thai Canal, Pipat reiterated the dependence on study results. He acknowledged the challenges faced by previous projects but noted the changing global context necessitating a new study on this large-scale investment.

Pipat also addressed concerns regarding the project's exclusion from the government's policy, clarifying that it has been a flagship policy of the Bhumjaithai Party since 2019 and remains a guiding principle for the Ministry of Transport's future plans.
