Bangkok: "Phumtham" is preparing to meet the National Economic and Social Development Board tomorrow to decide whether to accept the case of collusion in the selection of senators or not. He insists that it is not political harassment. He refuses to clear the air with "Bhumjaithai" and insists that he is doing his duty.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, as Chairman of the Special Case Committee or ECCC, talked about the consideration of whether or not to accept the case of collusion in the selection of senators as a special case, which will be discussed tomorrow. He stated that he was informed there would be a meeting on this issue and, as Chairman of the Committee, he called the meeting because there was information and many things were clear. He emphasized that his actions were not politically motivated and were in accordance with the legal process.
He further explained that the Election Commission (EC) had submitted a request for this case to be treated as a special case. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI), after reviewing the case, found it reasonable. Consequently, it was necessary to include it in the meeting agenda.
When questioned about the potential political implications of accepting the case, Mr. Phumtham urged not to view it as a political matter. He reiterated that the decision to call the meeting was based on a reasonable proposal and the presence of a legal problem. He emphasized the importance of following legal procedures and clarified that if the case was found to be clear, it had to be pursued according to the process, requiring a two-thirds majority vote from the special case committee.
Regarding the need to address potential tensions with the coalition government, Mr. Phumtham stated it was not his duty to clear the air but rather to ensure the process was followed correctly. He highlighted the importance of allowing the justice system to function properly.
When asked about discussions with Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, Mr. Phumtham mentioned that he had already spoken to him and expressed his gratitude before concluding the interview.
The 2nd Special Case Committee meeting of 2024 is scheduled for 25 February 2025 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ministry of Justice.
