A deputy governor of the Philippine central bank has stressed that the Bangko Sentral ng Pilinas (BSP) is not playing politics and is an independent agency, The Manila Times Online reported on Saturday.
One thing we know, we are not serving politics. The BSP remains an independent agency, BSP Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo told reporters on Thursday apparently in response to President Rodrigo Duterte who, a day earlier, blasted top officials of the BSP and the Anti-Money Laundering Council and called them to resign.
He maintained that his statement should not be taken as a direct contradiction of Duterte's claim that the BSP and AMLC were playing politics and hampering the government's efforts against corruption.
We are not the AMLC.May be the president connects BSP with AMLC because it is based at BSP complex, then the chairman is BSP governor. It is an independent body. Guinigundo said.
On Thursday, Duterte described BSP and AMLC officials as a bunch of crooks who are still hungry for money despite their fat salaries.
His outrage appears to stem from his suspicion that the AMLC is withholding some documents requested by the Department of Justice in its probe into drug-related transactions involving Senator Leila de Lima.
