Pheu Thai Party Defends Approach Amid Protests and Legislative Delays

Bangkok: The Pheu Thai Party, amidst chaotic protests and legislative delays, has defended its approach to the consideration of urgent motions, with key members criticizing the opposition for exaggerating issues. The party, led by Mr. Sutin Khlangsaeng, Mr. Anusorn Aimsaard, and Ms. Linthiporn Warinwacharoen, held a press conference to address the situation following protests over the handling of two urgent motions proposed by Pheu Thai and the Prachachon Party.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anusorn Aimsaard proposed postponing the draft bill on entertainment business operations, clarifying that it was not intended for immediate consideration but rather for the next meeting on April 9. He emphasized that the postponement adhered to procedural regulations, countering opposition claims of miscommunication. The party also confirmed its commitment to addressing the earthquake-related motion proposed by the opposition, underscoring the government’s concern for affected citizens and readiness for a comprehensive debate.

Mr. Sutin Khlangsaeng stated that the opposition had unnecessarily amplified a minor issue, asserting that both the government and opposition share the intent to discuss the earthquake motion. He explained that the postponement was necessary to comply with regulations requiring a week’s notice for such motions, arguing that the opposition’s actions delayed the earthquake discussion by three hours. He emphasized the importance of the Entertainment Complex Bill as a significant economic stimulus, noting its potential to generate new income and revitalize the economy.

The consideration of the Entertainment Complex Bill is scheduled for next week, with Mr. Sutin highlighting the urgency of economic recovery efforts. He explained that the bill, studied for over 20 years, aims to boost the economy through integrated entertainment venues, including hotels and sports centers, not just casinos. Mr. Sutin addressed concerns about potential conflicts, stating that differing opinions are natural with new initiatives and expressing confidence in parliamentary mechanisms to resolve disputes. He dismissed fears of repeating the controversial Amnesty Bill scenario, emphasizing the bill’s long-standing study and potential economic benefits.

Ms. Linthiporn Warinwatcharoj emphasized the necessity of the Entertainment Complex Bill for economic stimulation and acknowledged its controversial nature. She advocated for a careful first reading and the formation of a committee, including representatives from opposition MPs, government MPs, and the public sector, to ensure a thorough examination of the bill’s implications.
