Pheu Thai Government Rejects Allegations of Territorial Concessions in MOU44 Dispute

BANGKOK: The Pheu Thai government, facing allegations of territorial concessions under the MOU44 agreement, has strongly denied accusations of selling the country, framing the claims as a recurring opposition plot aimed at destabilizing the government. Mr. Noppadol Pattama, a Member of Parliament from the Pheu Thai Party, asserted that such allegations are unfounded and expressed unwavering commitment to protecting national territory. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Noppadol, addressing a party meeting, emphasized the importance of supporting the government's efforts regarding MOU44, a framework used in negotiations by previous administrations. He acknowledged concerns raised but expressed confidence in the government's ability to address them appropriately. Mr. Noppadol criticized the opposition for allegedly using falsehoods to undermine government stability, recalling past experiences of similar accusations during his tenure as Foreign Minister in 2008. Mr. Noppadol highlighted that the Supreme Court had previously dismissed charges against him, affirming his actions were in the country's interest and did not compromise territorial rights. He rejected claims that adherence to MOU44 equates to accepting the Cambodian continental divide, emphasizing that legal interpretations may vary but should not lead to accusations of treason. He assured that the Pheu Thai Party and the current administration would not relinquish any national territory, dismissing accusations of secretive deals with Cambodia over oil and gas resources. Mr. Noppadol stressed that cancelling MOU44 would not resolve territorial claims but rather impede legal negotiations and boundary delineations, which remain critical between Thailand and Cambodia. The government, he affirmed, would ensure transparency through a multi-step negotiation process involving the Joint Boundary Negotiation Committee and other relevant bodies, requiring Cabinet and Parliamentary approvals. Mr. Noppadol concluded by warning that any government losing territory w ould face public wrath and potential legal consequences, reaffirming the Pheu Thai government's commitment to safeguarding national interests and maintaining diplomatic relations.
