People’s Party Endorses Anutin for Prime Minister Amid Political Uncertainty

Bangkok: The People's Party has announced its decision to support Anutin Charnvirakul as the new Prime Minister, contingent upon the Bhumjaithai Party agreeing to specific terms. According to Thai News Agency, the People's Party's decision comes amid a turbulent political climate, marked by uncertainty and the recent news regarding the potential dissolution of Parliament. Mr. Natthaphong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the Prachachon Party, highlighted that the past days have been fraught with uncertainty, particularly with the lack of an official statement from the Pheu Thai Party about a proposal to dissolve Parliament. As discussions continue within the party, there is a strong emphasis on returning power to the people through new elections and the establishment of a legitimate government capable of addressing pressing national issues. The political landscape has been further complicated by the Constitutional Court's disqualification of Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra from office. The People's Party fears that ab staining from voting for a new prime minister could lead to a revival of ineffective coalition parties or the emergence of an outsider prime minister, which would conflict with the party's principles. Mr. Natthaphong stated that after consultations with the Pheu Thai and Bhumjaithai parties, the Prachachon Party has decided to support Mr. Anutin as Prime Minister, provided certain conditions are met. These include the dissolution of the House of Representatives within four months, a referendum on constitutional amendments if required, and the completion of a new constitution draft within the current term. Additionally, the People's Party insists that the Bhumjaithai Party refrain from forming a majority government to ensure the timely dissolution of Parliament. Mr. Natthaphong reiterated that the People's Party will remain in opposition, with no members participating in the cabinet, and emphasized that their decision aims to promote democratic governance and restore power to the people promptly.
