Land Transport department chief Sanit Promwong reiterated on Wednesday that pickup trucks were designed to carry cargo or goods and, therefore, they are not permitted to carry people on their back.
Riding on the cab of a two-door pickup truck which was registered before 1994 is permissible because the law on safety belts was not enforced then. But for pickup trucks which were registered after 1994, riding on the cab is not permitted and violators will face fine because pickup trucks were not registered as passenger cars, but cargo carriers.
Strict safety belt restriction has come into force as of today as police start arresting drivers of both private cars and public transport who do not observe the restriction.
For all pickup trucks, whether they are two-doored or four-doored, Mr Sanit said that they were not allowed people to sit on the back.
The strict enforcement of safety belt restriction has drawn widespread criticism among pickup truck drivers in the social media.
