NRC Aims to Normalize Chao Phraya Dam Water Levels Within 10 Days.

Bangkok: The National Water Resources Development and Reform Commission (NRC) has announced an objective to decrease water release from the Chao Phraya Dam to standard levels within a 10-day timeframe. This announcement brings relief to residents situated behind the dam in the central region as rainfall has ceased, and the National Water Resources Department is actively working towards stabilizing water discharge. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, an advisor to the Prime Minister and spokesperson for the Flood, Storm, and Landslide Relief Operation Center (RROC), reported a decrease in rainfall over the coming days. With a new cold air mass approaching, temperatures are expected to drop by 2-4 degrees Celsius starting from November 2nd. Farmers in the Northeast and North are advised to prepare for these changing conditions. Meanwhile, increased rainfall is forecasted for the South from November 3rd to 5th, affecting provinces such as Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, and Surat Thani. The Roya l Irrigation Department has been progressively reducing the water discharge through the Chao Phraya Dam. Currently, the discharge rate stands at 1,400 cubic meters per second, with plans to lower it to 700 cubic meters per second within the next 10 days, minimizing impact on downstream areas. In Chiang Rai Province, plans for Phase 2 of flood rehabilitation are underway. The strategy includes enhancing safety, boosting tourism and investment, and expediting compensation for flood victims. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has facilitated financial aid transfers to affected households across 41 provinces. Mr. Jirayu also addressed recent issues with tap water supply in Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province. The Provincial Waterworks Authority resolved the disruption, which was caused by debris blocking water pumping pipes. Water distribution has resumed at full capacity. Additionally, the 'Aew Nuea…Half Each' project, a collaboration between the Tourism Authority of Thailand and no rthern tourism operators, offers a 50% discount for tourists. Registration for the initiative begins on November 1, 2024, with limited rights available.
