The National Legislative Assembly overwhelmingly voted in support of charter-mandated bill regarding the Election Commission which will put an end to the term in office of the five incumbent election commissioners.
However, the five existing election commissioners will stay on in acting capacity until the new Election Commission is installed.
A total of 177 votes were cast in favour of the EC bill against one objection whereas Section 70 regarding the term in office of the current EC was approved by 161 votes against 15 who disagreed with 12 abstention.
The bill which sailed through the NLA will be sent to the EC and the Constitutional Court for deliberations to determine whether the amendments comply with the charter or not.
Both the EC and the Constitutional Court must complete their deliberations in ten days after which the bill will be returned to the NLA.
