National River, Canal, and Stream Conservation Day 2026 Announced by Water Resources Department

Bangkok: The Department of Water Resources is gearing up to host the National River, Canal, and Stream Conservation and Development Day 2026, with the theme "Flow with the Future: Preserving the Way of Waterways, Creating a Sustainable Future." The initiative aims to preserve Thai wisdom and enhance water resource management services.

According to Thai News Agency, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, through the Department of Water Resources, announced the event at a press conference held at the War Room, Mekhala Center. Mr. Teerachun Boonsit, Director-General of the Department of Water Resources, highlighted the significance of September 20th as the National River, Canal, and Stream Conservation and Development Day, commemorating Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's 1994 inspection of Khlong Saen Saep.

The annual event, this year set for September 18, 2026, at Pathumwananurak Park in Bangkok, will feature activities that emphasize the importance of responsible river and canal use. The event seeks to engage the public, youth, and various sectors in maintaining the health and sustainability of these waterways, which are integral to Thai life.

The Department of Water Resources has developed a comprehensive plan to address challenges such as the "Super El Ni±o" phenomenon. Measures include monitoring water levels, ensuring operational readiness of monitoring stations, and revising operational plans to establish safe zones in case of emergencies. This collaborative effort with the National Water Resources Management Committee aims to protect ecosystems and enhance water storage and drainage capabilities.

Khlong Saen Saep, a crucial waterway in Bangkok, serves as a focal point for these initiatives. The department's efforts, in partnership with local communities and administrative organizations, strive to maintain healthy ecosystems and promote sustainable use of water resources. This aligns with broader government policies on environmental conservation and natural resource management.
