NACC Probes Irregularities in Thai MP’s Asset Declaration

Siena:The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) is investigating potential irregularities in the asset declarations of Suchada Sangtansap, a Member of Parliament for the Bhumjaithai Party, and her Australian husband, Taiyang Sang. Concerns have arisen due to discrepancies between their income sources and debt repayments, alongside the undisclosed occupation of Suchada's husband.

According to Thai News Agency, the NACC has been examining the matter since Suchada's tenure as secretary to the Minister of Digital Economy and Society. This investigation is proceeding according to NACC regulations, focusing on income used to repay debts and other unreported assets. Suchada's luxury watches, absent from her declaration, are also under scrutiny. The NACC is exploring the timeline of her submissions to identify any overlaps in her declarations.

Mr. Kiattisak Phutphan, Deputy Secretary-General of the NACC, explained the verification process, which includes regular, confirmation, and in-depth checks. Currently, the NACC is performing confirmation and in-depth verifications, particularly after suspicions were raised beyond the standard 60-day review period. The discrepancies noted include inaccurate or incomplete asset declarations and potential concealment of facts.

The NACC has also identified the need for further investigation into a possible shareholding in a gambling website in Curaçao, regarding both the shareholding proportion and the source of the assets. If an asset declaration is found false, the NACC will notify the accused to allow them to explain and rebut the allegations before formal charges are filed. The investigation follows a structured procedure, allowing for extensions if irregularities are detected, although the NACC cannot investigate assets acquired before the declaration was made.
