Bangkok: The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has ordered an immediate stop to the construction of the Purple Line electric train in the area where a road collapse occurred. The incident took place in front of the entrance to Vajira Hospital on Samsen Road, impacting the construction site of the 4th entrance/exit at Vajira Hospital Station (PP19) of the Purple Line Project, which connects Tao Poon to Rat Burana along the Kanchanaphisek Ring Road. According to Thai News Agency, the road surface collapse happened on the morning of September 24, 2025, prompting swift action from government officials. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, has tasked Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms. Mallika Jiraphanwanich, to personally assess the situation. She is accompanied by Mr. Kajpajon Udomthammaphakdi, the Governor of the MRTA, to ensure an effective resolution is achieved. In response to the incident, the MRTA Governor, alongside the Purple Line Project Director, ordered an immediate cessation of construction activities at the affected site to determine the cause of the collapse. The team has also cordoned off portions of the construction area and evacuated nearby zones to ensure public safety. To manage the situation effectively, the MRTA has coordinated with several public utility agencies. These include the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA), the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), telecommunications companies, and local police. Their efforts are focused on resolving the disruption and managing traffic flow to aid commuters. In light of the incident, Vajira Hospital has announced a temporary closure of outpatient services for two days, though inpatient services will continue. The MRTA has committed to providing periodic updates as the situation develops.
