Motorcycle Riders Petition House Committee Over Reduced Fares

Bangkok:Parliament Building: Motorcycle riders have petitioned the House Committee on Economic Development, seeking intervention on the issue of reduced per-trip fares, following inconclusive discussions with the Digital Economy and Society Ministry.

According to Thai News Agency, the riders, represented by Ms. Kessiri Phusitthananan, submitted a letter to Mr. Veerayut Karnchuchat, Chairman of the Committee on Economic Development. The petition calls for fairness in the compensation provided by platform companies.

The issue stems from riders feeling unfairly treated with the reduction in rates by platform companies. Despite a joint meeting with the Digital Economy and Society Ministry to discuss compensation guidelines, no solution was achieved, prompting the appeal to the House Committee.

Mr. Veerayut Kanchanchuchat acknowledged receiving complaints about the calculation of per-trip fees, which are crucial to delivery riders' income. He noted that the problem had intensified since the oil crisis and mentioned that he had previously raised the issue with the government, suggesting that emergency loan funds should aid farmers, fishermen, and delivery riders. However, these groups have not yet received assistance, and increased service fees are affecting public expenses.

He expressed readiness to address the matter further, highlighting the complexity of delivery rider labor issues, which involve multiple agencies like the Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society. Coordination with relevant agencies will be pursued to find solutions.
