Bangkok: The Ministry of Transport has conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Rama 2 elevated expressway (Motorway M82) to ensure its readiness before the scheduled trial opening on August 28. The trial section will extend from Ekachai to Ban Phaeo, providing a continuous elevated route from Bang Khun Thian.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, along with Permanent Secretary Mr. Chayatham Phromsorn, visited the Intercity Highway No. 82 (M82) project site to assess the progress and confirm the readiness of safety measures and traffic management systems. The initiative is part of the Quick Win policy, aiming to alleviate congestion on Rama 2 Road and improve access to the southern region.
Mr. Pipat emphasized that the M82 motorway project is being expedited to facilitate public benefit, with the trial section being open 24 hours a day without toll fees. The trial aims to integrate efforts with the Highway Police, Provincial Police, and local agencies, ensuring round-the-clock support for road users.
Mr. Piyapong Chiwatnakulpaisan, Director-General of the Department of Highways, stated that the Department has been adhering to policies by conducting thorough inspections, especially of the elevated road structure. A recent load test, conducted in collaboration with the Engineering Institute of Thailand, confirmed the structure's readiness. The Department also inspected road surfaces, lighting, and safety equipment, deploying staff and assistance vehicles to manage traffic and emergencies during the trial.
The trial opening, set to begin on August 28, will feature a 16.4-kilometer section with four on-ramps and off-ramps. The trial will be toll-free, and the toll collection system will not be operational until the full opening in 2029. Speed limits have been set for different vehicle types, and certain vehicles are prohibited from using the elevated highway.
The M82 Motorway is expected to enhance travel and transportation efficiency from Bangkok to the South, supporting logistics, trade, investment, and tourism. It aims to improve economic opportunities and infrastructure benefits for the public and the economy along the route.
