Ministry of Digital Economy and Society Warns Against Fake News on Cambodian Border Situation

Bangkok: The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE) has issued a warning regarding the circulation of fake news online, which alleges that "Cambodia is rushing to dismantle 73 breakwaters after being threatened by Thailand." This misinformation is reportedly causing confusion and misunderstanding among the public.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Suchada Sangtanasap, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE), highlighted the findings from the Thailand Anti-Fake News Center (AFNC). These findings are part of the government's efforts to combat security and social threats, as directed by Mr. Chaiyanok Chidchob, the Minister of Digital Economy and Society. The ministry emphasizes the necessity of raising public awareness about technology-related crime, fake news, and misinformation.

As of December 21, 2025, the AFNC has identified a total of 165,453 messages, with 7,667 requiring verification. The primary source of these leads was Social Listening, responsible for 7,665 messages, followed by Line with 2 messages. Out of 47 cases needing investigation, 15 have been verified by relevant agencies. Among these, 9 stories attracted significant public interest, including 3 true stories and 6 false ones.

The most prominent fake news story claims that Cambodia is dismantling 73 breakwaters due to threats from Thailand. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, in collaboration with the Royal Thai Navy and the Ministry of Defence, has confirmed this to be false. The Royal Thai Navy stated that there was no order or pressure on Cambodia; rather, it was a request to dismantle the breakwater near maritime marker 73 due to environmental and security concerns.

Communication between the two nations was conducted through the Regional Border Committee (RBC), a bilateral border cooperation mechanism. The decision to dismantle the breakwater was made independently by Cambodia and was not influenced by any orders from Thailand. The Royal Thai Navy continues to prioritize peaceful negotiation and international cooperation to safeguard public safety and mutual interests.

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society remains concerned about the public's susceptibility to fake news on online platforms. Such misinformation can result in misunderstandings, property damage, and broader societal impacts. The public is encouraged to rely on information from official sources and to verify news and website links before sharing or acting upon them.
