Bangkok: Prasert Chantharawongthong, Minister of Education, has stated that he is not concerned about potential claims of ownership after a first-grade ASEAN studies textbook allegedly depicted traditional Cambodian costumes. The textbook is part of the Social Studies, Religion, and Culture curriculum under the 2008 Basic Education Core Curriculum. It describes Cambodian men wearing closed-collar shirts and loincloths and women wearing long-sleeved shirts, a shawl, a pleated skirt, and a belt. Mr. Prasert emphasized that each ASEAN nation has its own unique identity and plans to discuss national costume details with the Ministry of Culture.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Prasert was interviewed about the textbook, which is published by a private company. The Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) has received clarification from the publisher, but the Ministry of Education will further discuss with the Ministry of Culture to clarify and standardize the representation of national costumes.
Mr. Prasert assured that other textbooks would be reviewed to ensure accurate representations, acknowledging the sensitivity of the issue. He reiterated that the matter would first be discussed with the Ministry of Culture.
Additionally, Mr. Prasert addressed concerns about the education of children from refugee camps in Thailand. He stated that all children in Thailand have the right to education, regardless of nationality. However, regulatory issues have led to some children dropping out of school. The Ministry of Education is working on solutions, including managing education within refugee camps and convening meetings with relevant agencies and organizations like Save the Children.
The Ministry is considering whether existing regulations can be amended, which might involve discussions with the Ministry of Interior due to issues with identification documents. Mr. Prasert emphasized that the Ministry is committed to adhering to laws and human rights principles while ensuring educational management.
