Minister of Labor Proposes Extension for Myanmar Workers’ Stay in Thailand

Bangkok: The Minister of Labor is preparing to propose to the Cabinet an extension of the stay period for Myanmar workers in Thailand by an additional six months. This proposal aims to address labor shortages and support economic activities in the country. According to Thai News Agency, the recent announcement by the United States to impose a 36% import tax on Thai products has raised concerns. Mr. Pongkawin acknowledged the significant impact of this tax increase but expressed confidence in Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, to negotiate favorable terms that would prevent Thailand from being at a disadvantage compared to other countries. Mr. Pongkawin noted that if Thailand faces a lower tax rate compared to other countries, it could turn into a competitive advantage. The focus remains on negotiating terms that benefit Thailand against other nations with similar production bases. Regarding the possibility of ongoing negotiations with the US, Mr. Pongkawin confirmed that Mr. Pichai is actively engaged in discussions to address the situation.
