Minister Calls for Improved Meteorological Communication

Bangkok:Mr. Chaiyanok Chidchob, the Minister of Digital Economy and Society, addressed the need for improved communication by the Meteorological Department. He acknowledged existing advancements but stressed the necessity for further enhancements, particularly in delivering advance warnings to provide the public with options.

According to Thai News Agency, the minister discussed the ongoing efforts following the Prime Minister's directive to make meteorological information more comprehensible for the public. While there has been positive feedback on recent changes, Mr. Chaiyanok seeks continued improvements, especially in the context of crisis communications.

He highlighted the importance of timely and accurate forecasts, despite the inherent uncertainties in meteorological predictions. The minister noted that while the department reports promptly, even with potential inaccuracies, the goal is to avoid unnecessary public anxiety. Meetings have been initiated to address any delays in reporting.

Mr. Chaiyanok emphasized the need for the Meteorological Department to communicate potential weather outcomes well in advance, allowing the public to take necessary precautions. He also pointed out that while simplifying water level communications is important, advising on actions remains the responsibility of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

In response to concerns about public trust, Mr. Chaiyanok stated that the Meteorological Department must demonstrate its reliability. He assured that all information shared by social media originates from the department's data. To regain trust, the department is encouraged to be more transparent, improve its communication strategies, and enhance its technology and personnel, irrespective of crisis situations.
