Min Buri Prisoner Stabbed to Death: Justice Minister Offers Condolences and Initiates Compensation Process.

BANGKOK: Condolences have been extended to the family of an inmate at Min Buri Special Prison who was tragically stabbed to death. Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, the Minister of Justice, met with the mother and family of the deceased on Monday, November 11, 2024, to provide support and updates on the investigation at the Ministry of Justice building. According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred on November 9, 2024, at approximately 08:15, when a violent altercation broke out among inmates in Zone 5 of the prison. Officers quickly intervened, discovering a seriously injured inmate who had been stabbed with a sharp object. Despite being rushed to the prison hospital and receiving emergency medical attention, the inmate succumbed to his injuries. In response to the incident, Min Buri Special Prison has taken disciplinary measures against those involved and has notified investigators to pursue prosecution. The Corrections Division, in conjunction with the Special Operations Unit, conducted a raid and search of the prison, leading to the transfer of the perpetrators to other facilities in line with standard operating procedures for inmate control. Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and tasked the Department of Rights and Liberties Protection with processing their request for compensation. This will be reviewed by the Bangkok Subcommittee under the Act on Compensation for Victims and Compensation and Expenses for Defendants in Criminal Cases B.E. 2544 and its amendments. The Act stipulates that victims of criminal acts, who are uninvolved in the crime, are eligible for compensation, although the final decision rests with the Bangkok Subcommittee.
