Bangkok: Microsoft Corp has announced a $1 billion investment in Thailand over the next two years aimed at developing cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure. This initiative comes as Thailand positions itself to become a regional digital hub in Southeast Asia.
According to Thai News Agency, the announcement followed a meeting between Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith and Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The Prime Minister, who also serves as Interior Minister, expressed support for the investment, viewing it as a significant boost to Thailand’s “AI-First Nation” strategy. He emphasized the government’s commitment to facilitating data center expansion and establishing Thailand as a major tech corridor in the region.
Brad Smith expressed Microsoft’s confidence in both the Thai government and the local populace. He highlighted that the $1 billion commitment is part of a strategy to scale infrastructure and foster a long-term partnership with Thailand. This includes collaboration with the Thai private sector and substantial investments in developing human capital.
The tech giant has also pledged to enhance the Thai workforce’s capabilities, offering AI skill-building programs targeted at teachers, government officials, and non-profit organizations. This initiative aligns with the rapid adoption of AI across Southeast Asia, with Microsoft aiming to support Thailand’s efforts in reducing digital costs and improving public service efficiency.
