Bangkok: The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) has announced a reduction in residential electricity rates, effective from the September 2026 billing cycle.
According to Thai News Agency, the MEA's decision to lower electricity rates aligns with the Energy Regulatory Commission's (ERC) resolution from August 5, 2026. The new rates will be implemented starting with the billing cycle in September 2026, with the first bills reflecting this change to be issued on September 14, 2026. The reduction is achieved by removing the public electricity charge, following the National Energy Policy Council's (NEPC) resolution, which specifies a special rate for the first 200 units of electricity.
Residential users are categorized into two groups under the progressive rate system. For Rate 1.1, which applies to households using no more than 150 units per month, the rates are structured as follows: 2.3488 baht per unit for the first 15 units, 2.9882 baht per unit for the next 10 units, 3.0000 baht per unit for units 26 to 200, 4.1584 baht per unit for units 201 to 400, and 4.3583 baht per unit for any usage above 400 units.
For Rate 1.2, applicable to households consuming more than 150 units monthly, the first 200 units are charged at 3.0000 baht per unit, followed by 4.1584 baht per unit for units 201 to 400, and 4.3583 baht per unit beyond 400 units. These rates exclude service charges, variable electricity charges (Ft), and Value Added Tax (VAT), meaning the total monthly bill will vary based on consumption and other billing cycle components.
MEA has updated its billing system to accommodate these changes, ensuring the accuracy of meter readings and compliance with the new rate structure. Users can expect timely issuance of their electricity bills under the revised rates.
