Bangkok:MCOT Public Company Limited has successfully conducted the first real-world test of its Automatic Safety Alert (ASA) system on the DAB+ digital radio network in Thailand. This step is part of MCOT's ongoing efforts to develop communication technology for public benefit, particularly in supporting disaster warnings and communications during emergencies.
According to Thai News Agency, the ASA system testing was overseen by Air Vice Marshal Dr. Thanaphan Hraicharoen, Commissioner of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) for Broadcasting Affairs, and Senator Chib Chitniyom, along with representatives from relevant agencies and technology experts. The test involved transmitting signals to three receiving locations MCOT headquarters, the NBTC office on Soi Sailom, and the Bangkok radio transmission station at Ladprao 107. The demonstration was successful, showing the potential of digital radio networks to enhance public safety communications.
The ASA system is designed to support emergency alerts over the DAB+ digital radio network by triggering receivers to enter alert mode and insert messages or audio alerts during emergencies. It can also define targeted areas for alerts, allowing information to be directed to specific regions as needed. This technology could be expanded to other devices like LED signs and public address systems to broaden emergency communication channels.
The development of a digital radio-based disaster warning system is crucial to diversify communication infrastructure, especially since disasters can affect mobile networks. The NBTC noted that Thailand has been developing disaster warning systems through different channels, and the current testing phase is vital for evaluating technical specifications and suitability.
MCOT is also expanding its DVB-T2 digital terrestrial television network with Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) technology and DVB-I to lay the foundation for a National TV Platform. This initiative aims to enhance the country's access to news and information and support the transition to a digital society.
MCOT plans to further discuss the feasibility of implementing ASA technology on the DAB+ network with relevant agencies, under the guidelines and approval of the authorities, to develop communication infrastructure that meets public safety needs and supports Thailand's digital transition.
