The cherished Adidas Azteca football, used by the legendary Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final to controversially score against England, was sold for US$3.3 million.
According to Thai News Agency, the historic ball was carried off the field by referee Ali Bin Nasser following the dramatic match at Azteca Stadium in Mexico, where Argentina secured a 2-1 victory over England. The ball, which Maradona famously used his hand to deflect into the goal, was kept by the referee for over three decades. In 2022, it was sold for $2.37 million but failed to attract higher bids in an auction the following year, setting the stage for this latest sale.
