Yala: Mangosteen in the Betong mist, a unique product of Yala Province, has been granted Geographic Indication (GI) status and is now a significant export commodity worth over 62 million baht.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anukul Prueksanusak, deputy government spokesman, announced the registration of 'Mangosteen in the Betong Mist' as a GI product by the Department of Intellectual Property. This marks the fourth product from Yala Province to receive such recognition, following the Bannangsta Hin Banana, Yala Sadet Nam Durian, and Betong Shogun Orange.
The mangosteen originates from Tambon Than Namthip in Betong District, where farmers initially planted rubber trees as their primary crop, with fruit trees like durian, longkong, oranges, and mangosteen as secondary crops. However, declining rubber prices led farmers to focus more on fruit cultivation, enhancing the quality of their produce. The distinct geographical and climatic conditions of the area, characterized by morning fog, noon sunshine, and evening rain, contribute to the unique identity of the mangosteen. This climate results in a white, fluffy flesh with a unique aroma and taste, earning it the name 'Mangosteen in the Betong Mist.'
Mr. Anukul emphasized the government's commitment to promoting GI registration to protect local products with unique features, adding value and expanding marketing opportunities for farmers. The recognition of Mangosteen in Betong Mist as a GI product is expected to open new avenues for export, reflecting its acceptance and demand in international markets.
