Bangkok: Former Nakhon Si Thammarat MP Thepthai Senpong has voiced concerns over a mysterious audio clip suggesting a secret government formation deal. Thepthai, known for his political commentary on social media, believes the clip reflects an ongoing power struggle among the three major parties as the 2026 election approaches.
According to Thai News Agency, the audio clip allegedly involves a conversation between a national and a local politician. However, Thepthai has not confirmed the identities in the clip, despite recognizing a familiar voice. Meanwhile, Mr. Sakda Wichiansilp, Deputy Minister of Interior and Bhumjaithai Party candidate, has filed a police report in Kanchanaburi, claiming defamation from the audio clip, which he insists is falsely attributed to him.
The clip reportedly outlines three contentious points: the Blue Party's potential to form a government without unrest, the possibility of a coup if the Orange Party takes power, and the Red Party's improbability of forming a government due to their leader's imprisonment. Thepthai contends these points align with analyses from political figures and academics, shedding light on the strategic maneuvers within Thailand's political landscape.
Observers note that the Blue Party, identified as the Bhumjaithai Party, appears poised to lead the government with Anutin Charnvirakul as Prime Minister. This scenario mirrors statements by independent academic Professor Jermsaksri Pinthong, suggesting pre-arranged power deals. Conversely, the Orange Party, or People's Party, faces obstacles likely orchestrated by the old power bloc, as described by Professor Piyabutr Saengkanokkul, emphasizing the divide between traditional and emerging political forces.
The Red Shirts, aligned with the Pheu Thai Party, acknowledge their limited prospects due to their leader's legal battles. Mr. Yotsanu Wongsawat's comments indicate Pheu Thai's willingness to collaborate, but only as a coalition partner, reflecting their strategic positioning in the current political climate.
As the election nears, the leaked video's implications and its impact on voter sentiment remain uncertain, but it has undoubtedly added a layer of complexity to the political dynamics at play.
