Lam Pao Dam Halts Water Release to Combat El Ni±o Threat

Kalasin: Lam Pao Dam in Kalasin Province has announced a halt to water release during the dry season as a strategic measure to cope with the anticipated El Ni±o phenomenon. This decision follows the completion of the second rice crop harvest and aims to manage water resources effectively, with water levels currently above average.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Samruay Inphithak, Director of the Lam Pao Irrigation and Maintenance Project, reported that the dam's current water volume stands at 787 million cubic meters, representing 40 percent of its full capacity of 1,980 million cubic meters. This level is 11 percent higher than the average daily storage, aligning with forecasts from the Meteorological Department predicting El Ni±o conditions this year.

Mr. Samruay explained that with farmers harvesting their second rice crop, the dam has ceased water supply for the 2025/2026 dry season and 2026 rainy season to maximize support for agricultural areas. The closure of spillway gates is part of this strategy, with plans to reassess water and weather conditions in May and June to refine water management practices.

The government is also taking proactive steps to address the drought. Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, highlighted the Prime Minister's efforts in integrating the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Royal Irrigation Department, and other relevant agencies to support the public and agriculture. With El Ni±o's impact intensifying, the Royal Irrigation Department is urging farmers to plan their planting carefully.

Efforts are underway to boost drinking water supplies, enhance village water systems, and secure sufficient reserves in vulnerable areas, covering numerous regions across the country.
