Bangkok: "Khunying Noi," a nickname for prominent female politician Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, has voiced strong criticism against the current checks and balances system, stating that it is being manipulated in a way that allows corrupt individuals in positions of power to evade prosecution, ultimately burdening the citizens.
According to Thai News Agency, Khunying Sudarat expressed her concerns through a Facebook post, highlighting that when the checks and balances system is controlled by those in power, it leads to a scenario where corrupt officials can escape charges. She pointed out that the oversight mechanism fails when those who are under investigation have the authority to choose their investigators. This situation results in a lack of fear of scrutiny among the corrupt, allowing corruption to thrive while the general populace bears the consequences.
Khunying Sudarat provided specific examples to illustrate her point, mentioning the multi-billion baht local government exam cheating scandal. In this case, only minor offenders have faced consequences, while influential figures who profited significantly remain untouched. She also referenced a scandal involving masked figures stockpiling oil and embezzling over 50 billion baht from the public. Despite the magnitude of these fraudulent activities, the main perpetrators have yet to be held accountable.
In her concluding remarks, Khunying Sudarat emphasized the importance of resisting corrupt power. She warned that failing to do so would result in passing down a nation plagued by corruption to future generations.
