Bangkok: The Minister of Interior has directed the Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation to prepare for potential flooding in the northern region, following concerns over Typhoon Wipha's impact as it approaches Hainan Island.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, who is currently acting as Prime Minister, discussed the measures in place to handle the anticipated flood situation. He highlighted that the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) is actively coordinating with provincial authorities and closely monitoring developments.
Mr. Phumtham expressed concern about the expanding impact of Tropical Storm Wipha, which is expected to hit Hainan Island. He emphasized the need for vigilance and stated that preparations have been ordered from the outset. The DDPM has deployed large vehicles and various resources across all areas to manage potential flooding. While acknowledging that some regions are experiencing overflowing waters, efforts are underway to control and mitigate the situation, with public advisories issued for precautionary measures.
He further mentioned an instance of significant flooding in Lampang Province, where water levels had reached chest height. However, he reassured that the situation is improving and expects the water to recede within one to two days.
