Bangkok: The House Committee on Consumer Protection has showcased its proactive achievements over the last four months and is preparing to advocate for the Defective Goods Act to ensure digital platforms are held accountable. During a press conference at the Parliament building, Mr. Atthapol Traisri, Chairman of the Committee on Consumer Protection, outlined the committee's accomplishments and future direction, highlighting five main areas of focus.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Traisri presented a structured summary of the committee's recent initiatives, which include developing a robust complaint handling system, enhancing consumer protection in online markets, and monitoring housing management practices. Efforts have been made to streamline processes for quicker resolution of complaints, ensure product standards and seller verification in online markets, and protect housing buyers from misleading advertisements and contractual issues.
Furthermore, the committee has prioritized health, food, and safety by overseeing beauty salon damage, inspecting dietary supplements for compliance, and maintaining safety standards in restaurants and service establishments. The committee also aims to empower the public with knowledge on consumer rights and online safety, emphasizing the importance of prevention and awareness among children, youth, the elderly, and vulnerable groups.
In anticipation of future challenges, the committee plans to intensify efforts against online fraud, scams, and AI-related threats. It seeks to promote responsible practices among digital platforms and advance consumer protection laws, such as the proposed Product Liability Act and tourism-related protections. The committee is committed to adapting to technological advancements to safeguard citizens' rights.
Mr. Kantapong Prayursak, the third vice chairman, emphasized the committee's proactive approach to protecting consumer rights, which includes ensuring the right to choose, receive assistance, guarantee product safety, and access accurate information. The committee will conduct thorough fact-finding investigations to ensure fairness and transparency in all cases.
The committee is also focusing on legislative improvements, including amendments to the Consumer Protection Act, cybersecurity laws, and the Food and Drug Act, to better protect consumers.
Mr. Boonrawee Yomjinda, the fourth vice chairman, urged government agencies to conduct investigations starting from the source of production and communicate findings to the public. Meanwhile, committee member Mr. Wutthakorn Nutayakun highlighted the committee's readiness to address and resolve consumer issues comprehensively to ensure public safety.
