Police arrested a gunsmith and seized two illegal homemade handguns, ammunition and several gun-making tools in a house raid in Bang Khen district on Thursday.'
Metropolitan police commissioner Pol Lt-Gen Sanit Mahathavorn said that the suspect, 31-year old Tossaphol Fungsit, offered to sell guns on the internet at prices ranging from 7,000 baht to 15,000 baht apiece.
He said police had been trying to track him down and, finally, managed to locate his whereabout which is a townhouse in Sena Villa 3 housing estate in Bang Khen district. A raid was launched Thursday morning and the suspect was apprehended.
Tossaphol who claimed that he learned how to assembly gun from the internet told police that he made his guns from BB guns that he bought from the market, the have their barrels and trigger mechanism replaced with real ones.
He also said that he had improvised an oil barrel tank stuffed with mattress and sound-proof materials to be used for the testing of the guns he had made. Once there was no problem with the shootings, the guns would be offered for sale on the internet.
Tossaphol claimed he had already sold about 40 .38 and .32 caliber handguns to his customers.
Pol Lt-Gen Sanit said the suspect would deliver his guns to customers via parcels and often used fake names in case the postal office was not strict in checking the contents in the parcels.
