Gracz’s Eco-Friendly Packaging Tackles Microplastic Health Risks

Bangkok:In the realm of packaging, Gracz is focusing on the health risks associated with microplastics, which are derived from petroleum-based materials and pose significant health concerns. Dr. Veerachat Kittirattanapaiboon, Managing Director of Gracz, shares insights on developing food packaging that addresses these health issues while also being environmentally considerate.

According to Thai News Agency, microplastics, which have been associated with plastics since their inception in the 1900s, are a growing concern. Plastics, although convenient for food packaging since the 1980s, release microplastics even at room temperature when food is stored in them. These microplastics become part of the food cycle, eventually being ingested by humans. Research from the University of New Mexico found microplastic residues in the tissues of American subjects, highlighting the pervasive nature of this issue.

Most paper packaging on the market, labeled as eco-friendly, is coated with plastic, which can release microplastics. These coatings make the packaging difficult to decompose, contradicting their environmentally friendly claims. Dr. Kittirattanapaiboon emphasizes that the ultimate goal of environmental protection is tied to human health, as climate change exacerbates health risks, including microplastic contamination.

Gracz's innovative approach focuses on health by creating packaging that minimizes microplastic contamination. The company utilizes agricultural waste, like bagasse and rice straw, as raw materials, reducing agricultural pollution and creating sustainable packaging. Collaborations with farmers and Kasetsart University further support this sustainable model, reducing transportation costs and providing income for farmers.

Dr. Kittirattanapaiboon encourages change at an individual level, stressing that personal responsibility can lead to broader societal and environmental transformation, benefiting future generations.
