Governor Chatchart Advocates for Enhanced Urban Tree Management in Bangkok

Bangkok: Governor Chatchart Sittipunt engaged in a crucial dialogue with arborists to establish systems and promote standards, laws, and databases aimed at ensuring the survival of urban trees. He emphasized the importance of treating trees as vital components of the city, akin to citizens, requiring comprehensive care, from planting to maintenance.

According to Thai News Agency, the discussion highlighted the challenges facing tree management in Bangkok, such as the impact of construction on trees and the lack of uniform standards. The governor pointed out the scarcity of arborists and the demanding certification processes they must undergo. Continuous training was identified as essential, with the added benefit of providing arborists opportunities to earn additional income beyond their regular duties, potentially attracting younger individuals to the profession.

The meeting focused on promoting regulations to support tree care, especially in construction zones, mandating that project operators take responsibility for trees. Discussions also covered establishing professional standards for arborists, promoting licensing exams to improve skills and safety, and creating a standardized operational manual for tree care across districts. Furthermore, a database of significant trees in Bangkok was launched to facilitate systematic maintenance, with potential use as an educational or tourism resource. Support for arborists, including equipment and work structures, was also addressed. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Environmental Office and arborist network were tasked with formulating policy proposals and practical guidelines within two weeks.

Governor Chatchart stressed the integral role of trees in urban life, urging collective efforts to make Bangkok more livable through shared ideas, projects, and standards. The meeting, held in the Nopparat Room at Bangkok City Hall, was attended by Mr. Pornprom Wikitseth, BMA executives, and other relevant stakeholders.
