The government will hold a traditional Songkran celebration during April 13-17 and urge all sectors in the society to follow suit with emphasis on safety, proper clothing, and using water sparingly.
Government spokesman Lt-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said on Sunday that the campaign to hold traditional Songkran celebration was intended to urge the public to carry on with the Thai traditional culture and, at the same time, encourage Thais to use this opportunity to show their gratitude towards their elders and relatives and to promote family relationship.
Regarding the use of water during the festival, he said that revelers should refrain from using high-pressure water guns and splashing water at one another.
Lt-Gen Sansern said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha had instructed military personnel, police and local officials to provide convenience and to do all they can to ensure safe and smooth travel for the revelers.
The traditional Songkran celebration is scheduled at the Thailand Cultural Centre on April 11; at Siam Paragon on April 13-16 and at Siam Square on April 13-15.
