Bangkok: The government is taking decisive steps to crack down on "illegal tours and illegal guides" across the country. The initiative includes severe penalties, with a maximum fine of 500,000 baht and imprisonment for up to two years, and the establishment of special centers for rigorous inspections in all areas.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan, Deputy Government Spokesperson, announced that the government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and five key agencies, has set up the 'Joint Operation Center for Solving the Problem of Tourism Businesses Using Thais as Undercover Agents' (JOC). This initiative aims to urgently address the issue of nominee tours and illegal tour guides, focusing on inspecting tour companies and the activities of tour guides in major tourist destinations nationwide, along with strict enforcement of the law to enhance standards and safety in the Thai tourism industry.
Between October 2024 and March 2025, random inspections of 940 tour companies and 338 tour guides were conducted. Offenses by tour companies included operating without permission, failing to display a license, and not providing insurance for tourists. Tour guides were found performing duties without a license and not displaying a work order.
Operators without a license will face fines up to 500,000 baht or imprisonment for up to two years, or both. Unlicensed tour guides will be subject to fines up to 100,000 baht or imprisonment for up to one year, or both. Advertisements for tours must include the license number, name, and location, and only licensed tour guides should be used.
Ms. Sasikarn emphasized the government's commitment to elevating the standard of Thai tourism to build trust among both Thai and foreign tourists. The continuous crackdown on illegal tours and guides is part of efforts to promote sustainable tourism and uphold Thailand's positive image globally. She urged public cooperation in these efforts.
