Bangkok: The government is advancing efforts to enact legislation aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence by urging Parliament to urgently consider a draft law approved by the Cabinet. The law seeks to address existing loopholes and provide comprehensive protection for victims.
According to Thai News Agency, Captain Patthadarasmi Thongslueykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, affirmed the government's commitment to tackling domestic violence, following inquiries from opposition members of parliament about the draft Act on Protection of Victims of Domestic Violence. The Cabinet approved the draft law on August 25, 2026, and it has since passed a review by the government's parliamentary whips, moving towards urgent consideration by the House of Representatives.
The deputy spokesperson noted that the government has expedited the draft law through parliament and revised its content to address gaps in the original 2007 law. The new draft expands the definition of violence to include intimidation, threats, and economic deprivation, extending protection to former spouses and household members. It introduces a mechanism for immediate temporary protection orders and ensures protection for those reporting incidents in good faith.
Additionally, the legislation classifies domestic violence as a non-compoundable offense with increased penalties, particularly for offenses involving children under 18 or repeat offenses within three years, to enhance victim protection.
Mr. Chanin Rungthanakiat, advisor to the Minister of Social Development and Human Security, emphasized that the Minister has prioritized the expedited progress of the law since assuming office. Following approval by the government's parliamentary whips, the draft law is set for parliamentary consideration soon.
Mr. Chanin highlighted that the process requires careful deliberation but assured that all steps are advancing continuously. He called for cooperation from all parties to ensure swift passage in Parliament, stressing the importance of protecting individuals facing violence promptly.
