Bangkok: Forensic investigators are facing delays in collecting evidence from the Khlong Thom Center following a recent fire incident, as they await the demolition of the collapsed second and third floors. This development comes as authorities strive to determine the cause of the fire, with police questioning over 130 individuals and not dismissing the possibility of arson.
According to Thai News Agency, officers from the Central Forensic Science Division have been on-site to analyze the cause of the fire but have been unable to gather evidence at the fire's origin due to structural collapses on the upper floors. The fire, which started on the first floor in Zone C, has been pinpointed through video footage, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Safe access for evidence collection will require the demolition of the affected upper floors.
Mr. Supakorn Sonmai, Head of the Civil Engineering Department at Pom Prap Sattru Phai District Office, mentioned that the building owner had been informed to engage a contractor and supervising engineer for the demolition process, emphasizing the need for the safety of forensic officers. The building owner has shown cooperation, and the demolition is expected to proceed swiftly within the week.
Meanwhile, Pol. Maj. Gen. Chaikrit Pho-a, Commander of Metropolitan Police Division 6, reported that 170 complaints have been filed, and 138 individuals have been questioned regarding the incident. The police are exploring both accidental and intentional arson as potential causes. Investigators are waiting for forensic evidence to finalize the case. Additionally, while initial information indicates the building was insured, official documents are still pending, necessitating further verification.
