Bangkok: Water levels in the Chaiya District of Surat Thani Province are beginning to recede, yet flooding remains a significant concern in the economic district.
According to Thai News Agency, the low-pressure area responsible for the heavy rainfall has severely impacted the community in front of Chaiya Hospital, submerging several roads and causing water levels to rise up to a meter deep.
Military and district officials have been actively involved in rescue efforts, utilizing trucks and flat-bottomed boats to assist affected residents in the Wiang Subdistrict. The flooding, exacerbated by water flowing from the mountains, has impacted seven subdistricts, necessitating swift drainage operations and the establishment of support points for vulnerable groups.
As of this morning, water levels have continued to fall, particularly along the road leading to the Chaiya District Office. However, certain areas still experience water levels between 80-100 centimeters, affecting local homes and businesses. Efforts to expedite water drainage are underway, with officials deploying five water pumps to divert water into local canals.
In Pattani Province, authorities have issued warnings to residents along the Pattani and Sai Buri rivers. The Pattani governor has emphasized the importance of vigilance due to the historical risk of annual flooding in these areas. Additionally, Pattani Municipality has installed water pumps at several key locations to manage potential impacts from continued heavy rainfall.
The Meteorological Department has issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rain across the South from November 19-23. The conditions result from an intensifying northeast monsoon, raising concerns about possible flash floods and landslides. The department advises small boats in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea to remain ashore to ensure safety.
