According to Thai News Agency, MCOT's Minutes of Investment program interviewed Songphon Jangsiriwatthanathamrong, President of the Songkhla Chamber of Commerce, this morning about the flooding crisis in Hat Yai. During the interview, many people posted in the comments asking for help, such as Ms. Arunsiri Khamhong, who stated that everyone was without water and food. At the Honda Lopburi Ramesuan, 16 people were reported to be stuck, including 2 small children aged 3-4 years old. This location is situated next to Pithan Driving School and Toyota Sure in Tha Chang Subdistrict, Bang Klam District, Songkhla Province. Ms. Nantapat made an urgent request for assistance, highlighting that the water had reached waist-deep levels on the first floor of her house.
Mr. Songpol stated that the latest situation in Hat Yai has been marked by continuous rain, causing the water level to rise, reaching the second floors of houses and flooding roofs. He mentioned that through coordination with government and private sectors, efforts are being made to assist those affected, although the swift currents present challenges. He emphasized the distribution of life jackets and ropes to help villagers secure themselves while awaiting assistance. He noted that he had never experienced flooding of this magnitude before.
The current damage assessment for Hat Yai District is estimated to be at least 10-12 billion baht, based on Songkhla's annual GDP of 250 billion baht. The flooding has persisted for six days, with daily damage to tourism and trade estimated at least 500 million baht. Additionally, severe damage to property, lives, and vehicles necessitates urban restoration, contributing to the damage estimate reaching tens of billions of baht.
