Flood Alerts Issued for 14 Southern Provinces Due to Heavy Rainfall

Bangkok:The National Water Resources Office (NWRO) has issued a warning for 14 southern provinces to prepare for potential flooding from October 26-29. This alert comes in response to anticipated heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions.

According to Thai News Agency, the National Water Resources Management Committee (NWRC) has advised these provinces to remain vigilant against flash floods, landslides, river overflows, and stagnant water. The NWRC has also highlighted the need for monitoring reservoirs that have exceeded 80% of their storage capacity.

The NWRO's Announcement No. 12/2569, dated October 25, 2026, explains that a high-pressure system from China is expected to influence the region, bringing easterly winds and moisture over upper Thailand and the southern region. This weather pattern is likely to result in continuous rainfall, with some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy rain.

The affected provinces include Chumphon, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Satun, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat. Specific areas of concern are major cities and tourist destinations such as Phuket City, Koh Samui, and Hat Yai, which are at risk of experiencing significant flood impacts.

Additionally, the NWRO is closely monitoring large reservoirs like the Ratchaprapha Reservoir in Surat Thani Province, as well as medium and small reservoirs across the 14 provinces to manage water levels effectively.

Several major rivers and tributaries, including the Tapi River and the Pattani River, are also under scrutiny for potential overflow and flooding risks. The NWRC has urged relevant agencies to monitor rainfall and water levels, especially where rainfall exceeds 90 millimeters in 24 hours. Agencies are instructed to repair riverbanks, clear drainage systems, and adjust water management for reservoirs to mitigate the impact of incoming heavy rainfall.

Preparations are underway to deploy personnel, machinery, and equipment to assist residents in high-risk areas and to provide early warnings for timely evacuations if necessary.
