Farmers’ association wary of rice price fall after new harvest entering market

The farmer association is wary of ongoing fall of rice prices next week when new rice harvest is entering the market after the harvest season.

Prasit Boonchoei, president of the Farmers and Thai Rice Association, said beginning next week, white rice is going to enter the market in huge volume after the harvest season.

Although the current price of 8,000-9,000 baht per ton is acceptable by farmers, there is no guarantee that the rice prices will fall after the new harvest enter the market.

He expressed quite satisfactory in the government's measures to assist farmers but was wary of the price when more supply will be in the market next week.

He said some rice crops in the new harvest might have high moisture due to rains and floods, and this could suppress the price particularly when more supply is entering the market.

He said although the government would issue measures to help farmers, but it covers only jasmine rice.

He said direct selling of rice by farmers was a good idea to release rice from stocks, but it was only short-term method.

Farmers who planted rice in large areas could hardly sell their crops in large volume, he said.

He suggested a sustainable way of solving rice price problem was to cut costs, increase quality of rice and of market competition, as well as output control.
